The silence of a snowfall…

My yard is so beautiful in the silence of the snowfall. Everything is still and quiet, covered with a thick white dusting of glittering white snow. This sky is the color of melted butter pecan ice cream, dripping thick cold rain. The birds are twittering and quarreling over the bird feeders’ perches. My little dog won’t leave the porch. She doesn’t like the wet snow. Kat is meowing, fussing about the cold and her empty food bowl. My hands and feet are frozen after filling all the bird feeders. I’ve enjoyed the Lord’s snow and the earth’s quiet slow rotation today. I’m thrilled with this brief taste of winter but praying for those who battle this weather for months during their winters.

Oldest brother came by this afternoon. He didn’t shop for snow groceries yesterday so he had to come to town today for bread and milk. Said the shelves were empty and he had to buy a loaf of white bread instead of his usual. Tickled me grumbling about his milk being sour, not having milk for his hot chocolate this morning.

I sat in the porch swing a few minutes in the damp cold this afternoon listening to nature’s music. The symphony was a quiet musical of steady heavy melting snow drips mixed with bird twitters and bamboo leaves’ rustlings. I love these quiet days. I find God close by on these still moments.

“In the silence, we can hear the whispers of our soul.” — Deepak Chopra

We can find God in moments of silence. Stillness helps us align ourselves with God and brings us peaceful and tranquil times. Stillness helps us wait for God, surrendering ourselves to his plans. We think of God’s presence as being solely in heaven. But God created the earth and he hovers over us as a loving father. We are his children and the sheep of his flock. God is not in the past moments or the future moments. He is always in the present moment. Isaiah 41:10, states “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

It’s hard not to dwell on the past and it’s hard not to worry about the future. God exists in the now and when we surrender our burdens to him his grace will give us peace. We live with God in our present moments through our prayers, seeing God in the ordinary moments of our lives. He’s omnipresent, faithful, forgiving, and loving, never turning his back to us.

Take time to appreciate God’s work in your ordinary days and be content with God’s mercy as he guides you through life.
