We are God’s crayons…

We can learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, while others bright, some have weird names, but they’ve all learned to live together in the same box.” — Robert Fulghum

Another glorious fall day today, blue skies and puffy white clouds, perfect for porch pondering. It was hot, too, in mid-afternoon. I sat in the swing for several hours eating my breakfast and watching the birds and the butterflies frolic around the yard. The eastern blue birds that never cross the street came over and visited the bird baths today. They are so pretty, such an interesting color of blue, like God used a box of soft pastel sticks in rusty camel brown to color their little breasts, and a vivid cornflower blue to tint the birds’ wings. They have short little legs and short straight bills. Said to be symbols of joy and hope, messengers from heaven above. I was so close to photographing two of them perched happily on of the bird baths and the neighborhood hawk decided right at that moment to swoop down for his breakfast. He missed catching anyone in his talons but his loud wing flapping ran all the songbirds from the feeders.

Seems like there is always something after something, guess that’s the law of Mother Nature. Her beauty can be fleeting or drawn out like the beautiful canvas of a magnificent sunset, ever changing and evolving till the sun has turned off her beacon of light inviting the moon and stars to get onstage and shine brightly in their night sky canopy. Tonight’s sunset pageant was subdued in pale purples and golden yellows. The puffy cotton boll clouds were tinted just enough not to take away from the golden beauty of the sun rolling slowly down the horizon. The clouds looked like little puffs from a baby dragon, rounded and slowly moving across the evening sky. A brief pink tint touched the wisps of clouds that hadn’t melted away but it was only a fleeting of color. Mother Nature and Father Sky have great command of their paint brushes.

We all sketch our lives in colors of how we feel. When we’re happy we see bright, warm clear colors, red and orange and yellow make us feel happy and optimistic. Yellow is considered the happiest color in the world. We associate yellow with sunlight which makes us cheerful. The sun and its yellow light are the source of life on earth. When we’re born I wonder if the bright lights of the hospital room are a precursor of the coming sun in our lives. Blue and green are considered calming shades and relax our bodies. Guess that’s why staring out over the ocean evokes peace. Color is such a vital part of our world. We communicate in color and evoke emotions with color.

John Mayer said, “Life is like a box of crayons. Most people are the eight color boxes, but what you’re really looking for are the 64 color boxes with the sharpeners on the back.” Not everyone sees the world the same way or colors their world the same. I know I could not live with the eight color box, I have too many nuances in my life that evoke different colors and emotions. I love purples and blacks and grays but I do have lots of yellow sunshine in my life. We color our lives with our feelings and adding color to our lives can change the outlook of the day. We can find sunshine in a bleak day if we look hard enough or we can accept the cloudiness and wallow in the mud puddles. We all have the choice of God bringing sunshine to the darkness.

We could probably learn a lot of things from a box of crayons. We’re all different, traveling with diverse feelings and emotions. We are all unique and need to learn to live in harmony with all colors. Some of us have simple names like red and blue and then we have crayons named purple mountain majesty and bluetiful living in the same crayon box with us. Some of us are worn and rounded on the tip while others keep sharpening themselves. Sometimes we’re all coloring with different colors but we only see one shade. We need to understand working together we can color a masterpiece and change the world. I think the world needs to learn how to live in a crayon box of peace. We can work together to create a beautiful world. We need to color the world with God’s light.

We are God’s crayons.
