Did not do any porch pondering or porch swing perching today. I have actually done chores most of the day. Getting ready for my children coming home for our McMurray Thanksgiving dinner. When my family and my three brothers and their families gather there’s over forty of us celebrating together. We have such a good time with each other. I’m fortunate to have such a loving family and we all have so much to be thankful for. I know I’m blessed.
Walking Penelope gave me views of the pretty fall sky, its blueness tic-tac-toed by jet contrails. On our second walk the jet contrails had turned into long slender angel feather clouds floating slowly through the blue heavens. So pretty! I tried to find the sliver of Mr. Waning Crescent Moon on our early morning walk but he was hidden well.
Bible scripture in Genesis 1:16 says, “Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.” The lesser light, the moon, reflects the sun’s light just as we reflect God‘s light through our faith. I love Tahereh Mafi’s quote about the moon. “The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.”
We are like the moon with our strengths and imperfections. We are constantly changing, feeling connected to the world and yet alone, too. Psalm 89:37 says that God’s promise “shall be established forever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven.” The moon is a constant presence in the sky, steadfast and enduring. Psalm 121:6 states, “The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night,” giving us an assurance of God protecting us in the light of day and in the dark of night.
I’m reading beautiful quotes about the moon, perched in my reading chair, Penelope asleep on her pillow by feet. My favorite quote speaks of the moon as a female and sun a male. I feel the sun is a woman and the moon a man. Anyway…the quote by Jeffre Fry reads, “The sun loves the moon so much that he dies every night to let her breathe, and in return, she reflects his love.” I think that’s a beautiful thought.
Meets Ahluwalia writes, “The moon — a luminous guide for the poetic musings of my soul.” We all have a luminious light of God’s love in our souls, sharing the warmth and strength of the sun and the calm of the moon. We all shine at different times, illuminated by our faith. “Don’t compare your life to others. There’s no comparison between the sun and the moon. They shine when it’s their time,” Brenna Anastasia.
“The moon is a friend for the lonesome to talk to.”—Carl Sandburg
