Just a splash of color

The Lord blessed us with another beautiful day. Blue, clear sky with a cool March wind. Chose sapphire blue for the sky color today. No wispy clouds to mar the skyline. Sat down on the porch several times just long enough for Penelope to do her sniffing around the porch and yard. Was just too cool to enjoy pondering in the swing.

When I went outside near dark the dusk of the day was so pretty. The sunset looked like a black and white photograph. The trees’ limbs and branches were jet black against the gray almost white skyline. I’ve never seen a sunset that didn’t have color in it. I went to get my camera but I was too late when I got back outside. The scene had gone black. I missed my opportunity to capture a unique sunset.

Black and white aren’t considered colors but technically are shades. Black and white augment colors. Wouldn’t it be neat to open a large new box of Crayola crayons and choose the crayons to color the sunsets. I think I’d choose purple, pink, and orange. I’d draw some pink cloud wisps and the sun would be Crayola yellow. Wouldn’t use any other crayons but Crayola to draw my picture. I hate cheap waxy crayons.

Have you ever noticed how often children put rainbows in their drawings. And they’ll add a circle sun with spikes all around it. Read that happy children draw rainbows and suns. Not going to think about what sad children draw. I’m sure it’s painful to look at those drawings. Bless their hearts.

When I was a child I loved coloring. I was so careful with my crayons. If I broke one crayon, I’d beg for a new box. In 1958, Crayola debuted the 96 count crayon box with a sharpener inside. This box absolutely thrilled me. I never used the sharpener, though. I didn’t always get the big box but when I did I was so happy. I still love to color. I have an adult song bird coloring book.

I looked up the history of Crayola, really interesting if you love crayons. In 1903, the first boxes were sold door to door for five cents. Today there are 700 colors of crayons, 700! The newest color is bluetiful. Forget the cardboard packages of eight crayons when you can buy a tub of 240. I want one now! And just to name a few options — pastel crayons (They’d be great for sunset drawings!), bold and bright crayons, confetti crayons, neon crayons, and colors of kindness crayons. The colors of kindness crayons have words of kindness printed on each crayon. Gonna get my granddaughter a pack of these crayons.

I looked up the list of the names of the 700 crayon colors. Here are my favorites. Try guessing what colors they are. Madder Lake, Timber Wolf, Wisteria, Fuzzy Wuzzy, Tumbleweed, Razzmatazz, Jazzberry Jam, Inchworm, and Macaroni and Cheese. Those are my favorites.

Life without seeing color would be sad. God and Mother Nature are seriously talented artists. Think of painting the fall leaves, the different blues of the sky. All the different colors of green in the spring, the colors of summer vegetables, and the myriad of shades of colors in the sunsets and the song birds’ feathers. And the flowers, how fun to paint them, and on and on.

Somewhere I read that “our attitude is a box of crayons that color our world.” That’s true. We can color our world drab and gray, not choosing to see the other colors. Or we can add some bright colors. Our lives are like a painting and we’re the artists. Just a splash of color can change the canvas of our lives.

  1. my absolute favorite time of year is in spring when all the trees are dozens of green colors. or when the wild jasmine and wisteria cover the trees in color. Who can resist a box of beautiful crayons just waiting for young minds to create a beautiful picture that they come bringing to you as the most wonderful prize. And it is a wonderful prize that we miss praising to the high heaven because it had been a busy day. Take time to away admire treasures that are brought to you, looking back they are priceless. I still have some early drawings of the children’s, hope they sell them at the estate sale instead of throwing them away. Happy porch sitting today.
