We could learn a lot from crayons…

When God holds the crayons you can expect a masterpiece.”— Toni Sorenson

Tonight’s horizon was beautiful in shades of purple Crayola crayons put into Mother Nature’s hands by her granddaughter Spring. The colors of the sunset were rows of color like the crayons in their tidy green and yellow boxes. Mother Nature first drew layers across the landscape with wisteria and thistle colored crayons to set the pageant stage for the sun’s setting. The sun was perched on the top of the horizon as Spring picked out razzle dazzle rose, pink flamingo, fuschia, and purple pizzaz crayons for Mother Nature to color the heavens. Even the names sound pretty as they roll off the tongue. The sky was glorious as the different shades of purples darkened with the day’s demise into the midnight blue of the night sky. I’m thankful God gave me a child’s imagination. Crayola crayons slogan is “Everything imaginable.” I love that!

Toni Collier wrote, “I’ve learned that God can turn our messes into masterpieces…. Broken crayons still color.” When I was a child I could not color with a broken crayon. I’d beg for a new box all the time. I knew it would still color the coloring book pages but it was ruined to me. Thank goodness God doesn’t discard us when our faithfulness is broken by the storms of life. God can take all the storm clouds and lightning bolts and torrential rain and turn it around with a glorious rainbow arched across the blue heavens. His holy light colors our life with his love.

“We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors — but they all have to live in the same box.” — Robert Fulghum

Imagine picking out your day from a box of crayons. Would you pick the sunshine yellow crayon hoping for a sunny day or shut you eyes and take the luck of the draw? Our world can be colored like a box of crayons, each nuance layered and shaded differently. How we face the color of the day determines how the day passes. “Your attitude is like a box of crayons that color your world. Constantly color your picture gray, and your picture will always be bleak,” Allen Klein.

God can take the pain and regrets of our lives, the broken pieces and the failures, and turn our world into a beautiful purposeful creation. No matter how broken we are God wants us to know we still have a purpose and value in this glorious world. He can color the broken pieces of our lives with his grace and his light and love. We are all unique, created by God with gifts and talents to add beauty and light to the world. We are God’s crayons.
